I recently mentioned to someone how I believe that building your data capacity and being able to tell the story of your impact can help your organization get more funding.
He perked up, wrote down “funding” on his paper, and underlined it twice.
I chuckled and asked, “Did I say the magic word?”
But this really was a rhetorical question.
I know that for small community based organizations, funding is their lifeline.
They don’t get to support families without it.
And in the past year or so, funding has become more precarious than ever.
It’s not about dollars and cents though. It’s literally the difference between doing the work you love – that families in underserved communities often desperately need – and not.
I completely empathize with this.
The grant I worked on for the past four years, which trained graduate students to provide culturally responsive behavioral health services to youth from marginalized communities, wasn’t refunded.
It’s not because we weren’t effective. It was political. But we still had to stop running our program.
It’s heartbreaking because we knew it really had an impact.
The saving grace is that we can quickly and easily demonstrate that impact.
So as we navigate the challenges of seeking new funding in a political climate that is not friendly to what we’re trying to do, we at least feel confident that we can tell our story through reports, testimonials, infographics, and more.
Yet this was a large, federal grant, and the program was housed in a major university.
Community-based organizations do not always have the resources we were so lucky to access.
That’s why I love the work I do with Engage with Data.
You don’t need a million dollars to be able to tell your story.
You don’t need to be a statistician.
Through trainings, ongoing coaching, and direct support with your evaluation practices, I can help your organization build up its evaluation capacity and your ability to advocate for your work and families.
Being able to articulate the impact you have had on your community could help keep your services going.
I’m here to help you do that.
